EJI'ART'S
Artist, Performer, and Choreographer, but as a weaver of dreams, a conductor of emotions, and a custodian of boundless inspiration
TAIWO
Born in Nigeria, Taiwo Awaiye is a seasoned dancer, choreographer, singer, and actor with over two decades of experience. Teaching and transmission are integral to his artistic practice. He holds a diploma in contemporary dance.
In 2003, he founded the Ejiarts Company in Nigeria, and then again in France upon his arrival in La Rochelle in 2004. Growing up in a country rich with over 250 ethnic groups opened his eyes to the grandeur and dynamism of a mixed culture, allowing him to share stories through his body, words, and emotions. He has been exposed to diverse art forms, which he now expresses in a hybrid manner, navigating between multiple cultures and artistic influences that he continuously explores.
Artistic Journey and Collaborations
Taiwo has worked with numerous choreographers in Nigeria and Europe, including Heddy Maleem, who discovered him at a festival called "Dance meet dance." This encounter marked a turning point in his contemporary choreography career. He has collaborated on the ballet "Le Sacre du Printemps" in France and Mali, which toured Europe and other parts of the world. He also worked with producer Victor Bouch, writer Michel Ocelot, and choreographer Wayne McGregor on the musical "Kirikou et Karaba," one of his first stage performances in French. These experiences led to enriching encounters with Peter Badejo, Regine Chopinot, James Carles, and Irina Brook on projects that aligned with his artistic pursuits.
Solo Artistic Endeavors
In 2019, Taiwo embarked on creating his own projects as a solo artist. His first choreographic creation, titled "Sundar Appornata - Beautiful Imperfection," draws upon his origins, artistic journey, and the sacred techniques of Indian culture and dance. Through his encounter with 96 children during the "Rêve de Paix" show organized by A.I.D.E at the exhibition center, he witnessed the effectiveness of his teaching methods in transmitting his passion.
As a dancer and choreographer for the show "American Dream," in collaboration with three music and dance teachers and artists from the Conservatoire de l'agglomération rochelaise, Awaiye presents a spectacle that reflects his journey around the world as an artist and his desire to share his dream through the testimonies of others. This collaboration with artists and teachers highlights the value of exploring contemporary art today.
In his 2021 creation "YORUBA THE DREAM," Awaiye draws strength from the determination of African captives who transcended suffering to leave behind a shared legacy. As an African, he felt the need to reconnect with his roots after so many years in France.
Taiwo's Artistic Significance
Taiwo Awaiye stands as a figure in the world of dance, choreography, singing, and acting. His extensive experience, coupled with his rich cultural heritage and passion for teaching, makes him a contributor to the arts. His ability to seamlessly blend his diverse influences and express himself through multiple mediums further cements his artistic significance. Taiwo's dedication to sharing his stories and dreams through his art serves as an inspiration to audiences worldwide.
